Welcome back! In my introductory post, I shared that I'm currently balancing two freelance specialties, Social Media Marketing and Bookkeeping, while also pursuing my studies at Douglas College.
Lately, that "balance" has looked a lot like working 40-hour weeks alongside tackling 2 to 3 challenging classes per term. Sound stressful? It can be! But mastering this high-demand schedule has taught me valuable lessons I apply directly to my clients' projects: efficiency, discipline, and strategic delegation.
The Three Pillars of a Balanced Life (That Isn't Always Balanced)
I don't believe in the myth of the "perfect balance." Instead, I focus on three core areas that require constant management:
1. The Professional Pillar: Ruthless Efficiency
When your work hours rival a full-time job, you can't afford wasted time.
-
Time Blocking is Non-Negotiable: I use time blocks on my calendar not just for meetings, but for deep work, too. A bookkeeping block is only for reconciliations. A social media block is only for content scheduling. This prevents task-switching, which is a massive productivity drain.
-
Batching Similar Tasks: Instead of answering client emails one by one all day, I dedicate two specific times (morning and afternoon) to check and reply. The same goes for drafting multiple social posts at once. Efficiency is how I deliver high-quality work without burning out.
2. The Academic Pillar: The Rule of Three
With 2-3 classes demanding my attention, strategic studying is key.
-
Prioritize Impactful Tasks: I identify the three most important tasks for school each week (e.g., finishing the research paper, preparing for a midterm, completing a major case study). Everything else is secondary.
-
Context Switching: Since my academic subjects often relate to my freelance work (like accounting principles or marketing analytics), I try to schedule study time right before or after related work tasks. This keeps the relevant knowledge fresh and lets me apply it in the real world.
🏎️ My Stress Relievers: Finding the Power of the "Off Switch"
The secret to sustaining a heavy load isn't working harder; it's recovering smarter. My non-negotiable activities are my personal reset buttons. They remind me that life exists outside of spreadsheets and school deadlines.
-
🐴 Equestrian Escape: There's nothing quite like spending time with horses. It's a meditative activity that requires focus, connection, and full presence—the exact opposite of staring at a glowing screen.
-
⛷️ Hitting the Slopes: Whether skiing or just enjoying the mountain air, physical activity in nature is my favorite way to clear my head and gain perspective.
-
🏁 The Thrill of F1: I love the strategic complexity and high-stakes speed of Formula 1 racing. I recently had the amazing chance to attend some races. It’s an incredible reminder of what happens when precision, engineering, and teamwork come together flawlessly.
These passions aren't just hobbies; they are the fuel that allows me to show up for my clients and my studies fully engaged. A refreshed mind is a focused mind. You can't do good work when you are tired.
The Takeaway for You, the Client
If I can manage complex schedules involving college-level coursework, 40 hours of work, and still find time to recharge, you can be confident that I can manage your social media strategy or bookkeeping needs with the same level of discipline, organization, and attention to detail.
My background is proof that I value and embody:
-
Reliability: Getting things done, even when the schedule is tight.
-
Organization: Implementing systems that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
-
Balance: Knowing when to push and when to step back for better performance.
If you’re juggling too much and need someone to bring that same strategic clarity to your business finances or online presence, let's talk!
